The largest biomethane site in Switzerland.
In 2023, Carbon Impact successfully co-led a funding application for a BioCCS project located in Niederwil and operated by CO₂ Energie. The application was accepted by the Climate Cent Foundation.
Local and expert partners
CO₂ Energie, a Carbon Impact partner, is a joint venture between Regionalwerke Baden, one of Switzerland’s leading regional energy suppliers, and REAG, a leading player in food waste recycling.
Operational phase
In summer 2026, the project entered its operational phase, with the first batches delivered to Denmark for offshore geological storage. It will remove 4,300 tonnes of CO₂ per year, contributing to Switzerland’s climate neutrality.
A pioneering solution for CO₂ transport
Once liquefied, the CO₂ is loaded into specialised ISOtainers for a seamless cross-border journey coordinated by our partner Airfix:
• Road: transport from Niederwil to the regional rail hub in Basel.
• Rail: long-distance transit from Basel to Hamburg, followed by a final road leg to the port of Esbjerg, Denmark.
• Shipping and geological storage: offshore transfer to Project Greensand, operated by INEOS Energy, where the CO₂ is injected 1,800 metres below the North Sea floor into the depleted Nini West reservoir.
All transport emissions across the entire logistics chain are included in the project’s carbon accounting, giving a net atmospheric removal efficiency of around 91.7%.
An approach with global potential
Carbon Impact and Airfix are ready to replicate this approach in other countries, building on the valuable lessons learned from developing and delivering the project.

In 2022, a group of farmers operating Meurthenergie, a biomethane unit near Nancy in eastern France, contacted Carbon Impact to find out whether the biogenic CO₂ emitted by their biogas upgrading unit could be put to good use.
Carbon Impact then contacted the neighbouring biomethane units of Mortagne and Méthanisation Seille Environnement and convinced them to carry out a feasibility study on sequestering the CO₂ from all three units. The study, funded in part by BPI France, paved the way for the commercialisation phase of the first BioCCS project in France, which will remove up to 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year from the atmosphere.
Our partnership with Isometric covers this pilot project, and the carbon credits will be guaranteed under Isometric’s Biogenic Carbon Capture and Storage Protocol.

The development of BioCCS projects in France will initially rely on geological storage in the North Sea, off Norway or Denmark, which is already operational.
However, studies such as EvastoCO₂ (carried out by the BRGM) point to strong potential for onshore storage in France, particularly in the Grand Est region.
The Néostock project, carried out with our partner Eosys and the Université de Lorraine and funded by GRDF, shows that the subsurface in Lorraine could be suitable for storing CO₂ from anaerobic digestion, opening the way to a competitive, local negative-emissions sector.
